In 1936, Turing introduced the concept of a theoretical machine known as the Turing Machine. This conceptual device was fundamental to the development of modern computer and AI systems. It laid the groundwork for the idea that any computation could be carried out by a machine following a set of rules, an essential concept in AI.
Turing’s work also extended into codebreaking during World War II. He played a pivotal role in deciphering the German Enigma machine, which was used for encrypted communications. In 1952, Turing faced criminal charges and underwent chemical castration as an alternative to imprisonment. Tragically, he died by suicide on June 7, 1954, at the age of 41.
